I can't quite explain it, but deus ex feels more like an action-adventure game?
But what exactly is the difference?
And how come the stealth in deus ex is so much more complex and well developed than oblivion even though both of them are rpgs?
And finally are all action rpgs like deus ex and all rpgs like oblivion in general?
thanks :DWhat exactly is the difference between rpgs like deus ex and oblivion?
Oblivion is more geared towards sandbox-style play, where Deus Ex is more built solely on a stealth/combat blend. Deus Ex is a shooter above RPG, and Oblivion is an RPG over action-adventure. There are a variety of action RPGs out there, from Fallout 3 to Mass Effect. What exactly is the difference between rpgs like deus ex and oblivion?
Hmm Yes both are open world games and both are rpgs but I say that in their own unique way they have evolved from their tradition japanese role-playing game style.
Look at oblivion in terms of scope its huge and their character customization is complex in a good way but its classes are very inter-changeable e.g I have a sword instead of running up and slashing I crouch down and make kill "Sneak increased" I fire a fire bolt "Destruction increased" Shoot a couple of arrows "Marksman increased" etc. You don't really go down one path its all very "general" if you know what I mean so oblivion's game play is simple but its story(main quests and side quests) and the scope is mind blowing so much freedom that only fallout 3 can compete with which ironically is made by the same company :)
Then look at games like Deus ex the charachter customization isn't like oblivion or not present at all. But when you choose which class to take you have to adapt your gameplay style to suit your class and the abilities your class provides you, that is what makes you play a game again to experience what the other classes offer you. And in terms of decision making it actually affects your play-through which I find intriguing. Dialogue is so much more engaging.
Its hard to give a general description of rpg's now they all seem unique. But Im inclined to think that action rpg's are going down the Deus ex route look at mass effect similar concept but different gameplay.
I think oblivion set the bar for western rpg's two worlds was a take on oblivion (not that good though). Dragon Age went back to a turn based style awesome story though... (Morrigan... sigh) But Oblivion was awesome even the music and the scenery soooo nostalgic. I think oblivion is in a class of its own and can only be surpassed by a sequel.
